TOURISM IS 4.0 IN CANAZEI AND CAMPITELLO

The project lasted 8 years and cost over 300 thousand euros. 15 km of cables were laid in the two municipalities

More than fifty accommodation and tourist service facilities are now connected to Mynet's ultra-broadband.

CANAZEI, 24 September 2024. In Canazei and Campitello di Fassa, tourist hospitality is 4.0, with ultra-broadband connections to over 50 facilities including hotels, ski lifts and other services for visitors and residents.

Last June, a major infrastructure project in the area was concluded, implemented by Mynet, a leading company in northern Italy in fiber optic connectivity, which began in 2016 in Canazei and then continued in the municipality of Campitello di Fassa. Eight years of work concentrated in four calendar months (April-May and October-November) to avoid impacting the tourist season and to take advantage of favorable weather conditions for underground excavations.

A project made possible thanks to the partnership between Mynet, the Municipality of Canazei, the Municipality of Campitello di Fassa, with the support of Confcommercio Trentino and Gestor, entities that bring together the interests of tourism entrepreneurs and support their development at a provincial level.

"Today we are officially inaugurating a project in which we believed a lot, investing time, skills and over 300 thousand euros, which has seen the activation of over fifty fiber connections for local businesses, previously served by copper cables with a browsing speed of 4 or 5 Megabits per second at most. The same companies, whether they are hotels, ski lifts or personal services, thanks to the laying of over 15 kilometers of fiber cables, can now count on connectivity of up to 1 Gigabit per second, with a significant technological leap" said Luca Legittimo, CEO of Mynet.

"It all started by meeting the needs of the company Sviluppo Incremento Turistico Canazei (SITC) which needed cutting-edge digital infrastructures to support the digital transformation of the company. In collaboration with the Municipality of Canazei, which I thank for the collaboration and availability demonstrated, in 2016 an agreement was activated that provided for the possibility of using the existing public lighting pipes to insert the fiber optic cables, thus minimizing tampering with the soil, precisely to safeguard the tourist context as much as possible - explained Simone Sponza, Area Manager Trentino of Mynet - On the other hand, we have bound some public buildings free of charge, such as the Cinema Teatro Marmolada, the Carabinieri Command, the former Fire Brigade Barracks and the detachment of the University of Verona in Alba".

One of the first structures to be connected to the ultra-broadband back in January 2017 was SITC, a company that manages a significant part of the ski lifts and ski slopes of the upper Val di Fassa. The intervention was then extended to the nearby municipality of Campitello di Fassa, with work starting in September 2023, then suspended in October due to premature frost, and resumed last May, with 14 accommodation facilities connected to the ultra-fast band. Further intervention sessions are planned shortly in both municipalities to complete the last users.

“It was a project of great professional satisfaction, also given the particularly valuable tourist and landscape context – commented the infrastructure manager of Mynet Omar Vacchelli – we worked by adopting challenging measures to be less harmful to the environment and less impactful on citizens, tourists and economic activities, intervening in accordance with the tourist season and the weather seasons. To speed up the work as much as possible in the narrow time window available, we diverted several teams of specialized technicians to work on Canazei and Campitello at the same time. As a person who loves the mountains, it was a very rewarding assignment.”

From a technical point of view, Mynet has created a fiber optic backbone connecting Canazei and Campitello and a highly widespread network, which also runs along the cycle/pedestrian paths and is potentially usable to implement video surveillance and wi-fi services in the two municipalities. An intervention that gives a profound innovation to the territory for the benefit of citizens, tourists and economic activities.

“We are satisfied – explained Luca Moschini for Confcommercio Trentino, present at the press conference with Stefano Balista and Greta Prezzi from the Marketing Office – with this project because it represents an example to look at from several points of view: first of all, a significant number of hospitality and tertiary sector businesses are connected with a high-speed line that will allow further development of the services offered and the quality reserved for customers. There is also an issue linked to private enterprise, to businesses that really know how to network and work for a widespread territorial advantage: it is a method that, where possible, should be recognized and appreciated because it allows territorial innovation even when the public administration, for various reasons, cannot intervene. Finally, I would like to underline, in addition to the competence and professionalism of Mynet, also the direction of our association, Confcommercio Trentino, which is sensitive to the needs of businesses and which, by nature, plays the role of ‘facilitator’ and catalyst of the positive energies of the territory in favor of businesses but also of the entire social fabric”.
